Developing Technology Skills for the Future With CodeClan

Traveltech for Scotland was delighted to collaborate with industry partner CodeClan to deliver an industry event at the start of 2021. The event, Tourism & Hospitality: Developing Technology Skills for the Futurefocused on the value and benefits of acquiring tech and digital skills for the future, with different learning perspectives from those in the tourism, tech and hospitality sector.

At this event we learned more about the courses and programmes which CodeClan offers and heard from speakers from the tourism and hospitality industry as well as a recent CodeClan graduate. The event was very well attended and received, with a lot of interest from participants in CodeClan programmes.

Skills and Learning Takeaways

Some of the key takeaways from our speakers were that learning and gaining new skills can build tremendous confidence, help us stay resilient and face challenges — all highly advantageous skills to have, particularly during a pandemic! Transferable skills are hugely valuable, and we shouldn’t underestimate what skills we already have when changing career -chances are, these will stand us in good stead in a new environment.

Developing New Data Skills in a Two-Day Course

The significant impact from our event with CodeClan allowed us to develop our working relationship further. In May 2021, continuing our work together we were able to deliver a 2- day Introduction to Coding for Data Analysis course, fully funded by the Data Lab Skills for Work programme.

The Data Lab Skills for Work funding allowed Traveltech for Scotland and CodeClan to work together to deliver the course to the traveltech, tourism and hospitality sector – a total of 16 businesses took part, across Traveltech companies, tour operators, festivals and events, hospitality venues and visitor attractions.

Course Feedback

Course participants found the two day programme an accessible way to learn, enjoying the course content and being pleasantly surprised by how much they could learn in two days. They were also very happy with the CodeClan instructors: “Great pace and willing to help when something wasn’t working.”

Pete Duncan, formerly Head of Visitor Experience at Mercat Tours said, “What the course has done is feed into an overall understanding of the possibilities. It was a great course and we covered a lot in two days. It’d say it allows us to understand the functionality offered by code solutions as we develop our data strategy.”
